The Day Doctor Who wanted to cover Cardiff in alien goo
In a little bit of television history newly released correspondence gives a fascinating insight into just how Cardiff has become the perfect setting for Doctor Who.
One bizarre request reveals that the show’s producers once requested of local councillors: “We’d like to cover the city in bubbling blue goo.”
It seems it was no problem. The council even made a cherry picker available so workers could put the blue gel all over the city’s street lights.
Another batch of e-mails reveals that at the launch event for Matt Smith’s debut as the Doctor, BBC bosses wanted to rename the area near Cineworld as Time Lord Square.
Councillors approved the renaming, but for one night only.
The e-mails show the extraordinary effort and attention to detail that goes into setting up scenes for the sci-fi hit in Cardiff, which is the permanent home for the filming of the series.
The producers also requested permission to bring a “pirate ship” into Cardiff Bay.
I love Wales.

Made to watch this by a Freestyle Dance Team on a 24hr coach journey, and didn’t completely hate it…delirium must have set in.
